They provide a more substantial structure than dental fillings, but they do not cover quite as much of the natural tooth as a dental crown.

What Are Inlays and Onlays?

Both inlays and onlays are fabricated restorations that are designed to cover the top portion of a molar or pre-molar. Inlays cover the space between the cusps (the ridges along the outer edges of the biting surface), while onlays may include some or all of the cusps. They are most often made of ceramic, porcelain, or composite materials to mimic the natural colour and translucency of the teeth.

What are Inlays and Onlays Used For?

Inlays and onlays are typically recommended by our dentists due to advanced tooth decay or damage to the biting surface of the tooth (such as chipping or cracking). In some cases, tooth decay is too advanced for a typical dental filling to be applied. Inlays and onlays are sometimes called “indirect fillings” because they serve the same purpose, but they are created outside the mouth and applied to the tooth as a single restoration.

Inlays and onlays are custom-made and will require two appointments to complete. During the first appointment, your dentist will prepare your tooth and take impressions to fabricate your inlay or onlay. They will be permanently placed during your second appointment.
